Walmart shopper reportedly buys Nvidia RTX 5080 at almost half-price — clearance aisle could be a way to beat GPU price hikes

We’ve seen some discounted Nvidia GPUs with their prices well and truly slashed once again at Walmart in the US, proving that the retailer’s clearance aisle is well worth checking out for potential bargains.
Tom’s Hardware noticed that a Redditor posted about buying a PNY GeForce RTX 5080 graphics card for $562, a model that carries a recommended price of $999 – so that’s almost half-price.
Later in the same thread, another poster flags up multiple RTX 5070 GPUs – again from PNY – which have been given a nearly 1/3 discount by Walmart, reduced to $439 (from $630).
These appear to be genuine purchases, albeit there was an incident of AI fakery in this thread, as Tom’s makes clear in an update to its story.
Furthermore, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen amazing bargains with yellow sticker reductions as part of Walmart’s CVP (customer value program). Typically, these stickers are applied to customer returns being resold, or to goods with damaged packaging or other imperfections.
Back in October 2025, a PNY RTX 5090 was bagged by a Redditor who paid just $1,200 for the privilege, another incredible deal (that Tom’s Hardware again picked up back at the time).
Analysis: it seems lucking out is possible at Walmart – but there are cautionary tales, too
When you consider that GPU prices are very much on the rise now – particularly for higher-end Nvidia graphics cards – these really are some eye-opening bargains. Getting an RTX 5080 for not much more than $500 is likely to be the GPU deal of the year, I’d wager.
One thing to note, though, is that another Redditor points out they bought a PNY RTX 5090 at MSRP – an achievement in itself, these days, considering these GPUs cost north of $3,000 currently – but they claim it turned out to be a fake. Inside the 5090’s box was an RTX 4080, the Redditor tells us – nasty.
Remember, I mentioned these yellow stickers are applied to online returns? Well, as seen in some other scams with major online retailers, what can, in theory, happen is that someone buys the RTX 5090, replaces it with another GPU, like a 4080, and returns the RTX 5090 to the store, keeping the Blackwell flagship. If the staff at the retailer doesn’t check the return properly, it could end up with a CVP sticker in the clearance aisle, as appears to have happened in this reported incident.
As ever, with any high-value tech product these days, it doesn’t hurt to video the unboxing of the item just to have some evidence to back up your case if it comes to resolving any potential sting like this. This is generally more of a concern with online purchases, mind you, not those from a bricks-and-mortar shop.
One final point: why are all these clearance bargains PNY graphics cards, you may be wondering? I don’t have an answer for that.
