What a Good Ukraine Peace Looks Like
President Trump on Monday touted “great progress” in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, and kyiv is undoubtedly prepared to make painful concessions to avoid capitulation or abandonment by the United States. No one wants the war to end more than the Ukrainians who are fighting and dying.
But the crucial question remains what kind of peace? It is therefore worth describing the conditions that would create an honorable peace in Ukraine and deter further war whenever Vladimir Putin chooses to invade the country again.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio On Sunday, we described the U.S. peace offer as a “living, breathing document,” and we welcomed the red pen of the initial 28-point plan that leaned heavily in favor of Vladimir Putin. This document would leave a sterilized Ukraine, barred from associating with Western security institutions and vulnerable to further invasion.
The overarching goal of any peace is to allow Ukraine to survive as an independent nation capable of determining its own future. If his people want to align with Russia, so be it. But everything indicates that they want to align with the West, including the European Union and NATO.
