The tariff stimulus check has certainly been a much debated topic since President Donald Trump floated the idea of a $2,000 tariff refund weeks before Thanksgiving.

More than two months later, the possibility of Americans seeing that money remains murky.

Are another round of stimulus checks, fueled by tariff money, headed your way from the IRS in 2026? Here’s the status and betting odds, predictions.

In an interview this month, Trump responded to questions about the reality of Americans getting his proposed tariff dividend checks, “Well, I am going to — the tariff money is so substantial. That’s coming in, that I’ll be able to do $2,000 sometime. I would say toward the end of the year.”

But the reality of this tariff stimulus check is likely resting on a looming Supreme Court decision over the legality of those tariffs, to which he’s commented on through his social media blasts predicting the catastrophic consequences of a potential Supreme Court ruling against his tariff orders and having to refund anyone who paid them.

Here’s the status on Trump’s $2,000 tariff dividend proposal and the odds, predictions on when or if it is really happening at all.

Are we getting $2,000 stimulus check 2026 from the IRS?

In early November, Trump floated the idea of issuing a $2,000 dividend to “middle income people and lower income people” from the “hundreds of millions of dollars” collected in tariff revenues. However, later that month, Costco and other American business owners filed lawsuits against the Trump administration, seeking a “complete refund” of tariffs paid on imported goods if the Supreme Court decides to strike down tariffs imposed under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

The Supreme Court could issue a ruling soon on whether to strike down all or part of the tariffs and clarify how importers would receive tariff refunds.

Last month, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said that tariff dividend checks would likely need Congressional approval, adding “the deficit relative to last year is down by $600 billion and so, in the summer, I wasn’t so sure that there was space for a check like that. But now I’m pretty sure that there is.”

On the looming Supreme Court tariff decision, Hassett said “It’s going to be pretty unlikely that they’re going to call for widespread refunds, because it would be an administrative problem to get those refunds out to there.”
