Transcript: Gavin Newsom’s Harsh Trump Takedown Nails It: “Wake Up!”

Sargent: And by the way, many people could oppose what we say here by stressing that, Well, shouldn’t Democrats focus on what is popular? What about moderate democrats in difficult fields? I am sensitive to all this. I think that an approach as this can coexist with your Democrat typical of the swing district that may want to do things a little differently. There must just be a certain meaning among all the institutional actors of the party they need to make more noise of the type we are talking about. And if the moderates want to go in certain directions in their states or districts, I think it’s okay. Do you think it’s a difficult balance to find, Will?
Stancil: I don’t think it’s particularly difficult to hit. Most Democrats are not in swing districts. Most Democrats do not represent the battlefield districts. If you are a democrat and you are just in an ordinary democratic district, if you earn reasonable margins most of the time, there is no reason in the world that you weaken the brand of the Democratic Party by being weak on Trump. There is no reason to avoid Trump. There is no reason why you should not talk about the most urgent problems in the country, the authoritarianism and the inability of Trump all the time. If there is someone in a district that is more republican of two points and that they must really identify themselves as separated from the party and show its independence, very well, leave it. I don’t care at all. It’s great. If they can win this election and they remain democrats, it is wonderful. But we don’t help them by being them. We help them by being us and letting them have independence to do what they need.
Sargent: I agree 100% with this. And by the way, there is another objection that we should probably face. This is something that I think I saw you tackling you before, but there is meaning that if a certain number of Democrats in safe areas make things like that, it tarnishes the global party in a certain sense and painted the party as a wider entity Like not being in contact with what real people think and feel daily. I have the impression that it is a problematic way of thinking of politics. I don’t really buy that there is this real calculation on the part of the voters, where they see this type of conduct of democrats in non -swing districts and say, Well, the whole party is not interested in my wallet or my wallet. What do you think, will do it? What do you think is the answer to this?
