Congratulations to all the young athletes and their teams on the Times All-Area high school basketball teams. I wonder about the choices seniors make in their college commitments and turn to the Times to explain why UCLA apparently isn’t on the radar of these younger players.

The academic demands of the Bruins were once known to be a significant obstacle for many high school players. Is this still true? Aren’t local graduates the cream of the crop that Southern California has been known for in recent years? Do NIL agreements affect the choices of these future first-year students? Isn’t UCLA doing a lot of outreach for top local talent? Is Los Angeles so horrible for these kids that staying close to home isn’t even on their radar?

I’m sure I’m not the only one seeking clarity on the issue of local talent exodus to Missouri, Oregon State, Texas, North Carolina, Nevada and, most confusingly, USC.
