Only 7% of the original surface area of Europe’s peatlands remains. What’s more: their climatic boundaries are shifting. An international study led by Wageningen University as part of the WaterLANDS project analyzed the current distribution of peatlands and mapped their likelihood of persisting in future climate scenarios. They conclude that climate change will have a massive impact on the functioning of peatlands, with the exception of the cooler and wetter regions of northern Scandinavia, Ireland, Scotland and the mountains.
