The top five qualify for the Champions League, but with just four rounds of the season remaining, Chelsea are set to be adrift.
Goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck at the AMEX Stadium did not reflect Brighton’s dominance that evening. The victory allowed them to overtake Chelsea and move up to sixth place in the table, boosting their own quest for European football next season.
It was a seventh defeat in Chelsea’s last eight games in all competitions. The team crowned club world champions less than a year ago have won just one of their last nine league games and have failed to score in each of the last five.
While he plays an FA Cup semi-final against Leeds on Sunday, his campaign has deteriorated in recent weeks, including elimination from the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain.
