USWNT’s biggest threats at 2027 Women’s World Cup: Women’s Euro winners England, reigning champs Spain in mix

The next edition of the Women’s World Cup is perhaps two years, but the next tournament quickly becomes in the lead for many national teams in the world, for which preparation is now starting to ensure that they set up a strong performance in Brazil.

This is particularly true for the American national women’s team, which this year used major competition to examine new talents and experiment with new tactical ideas with the Hope to win the World Cup for the first time since 2019. The quadruples world champions are once again one of the best candidates at the first prize in sport at this stage, especially after winning Olympic gold in Paris last year and returning to the top of the FIFA ranking. The era of the USWNT’s experimentation only strengthened this belief – head coach Emma Hayes introduced several new players to the fold, many of whom impressed along the way and are at the first stages of reasonable advocacy of their inclusion on the World Cup list in two years.

Hayes, however, is mainly responsible for evolving the USWNT in a period of rapid growth in the female game. As a World Cup in 2023 and, to a lesser extent, the female euro of 2025 demonstrated it, the game is more competitive than ever and there are several realistic contenders for the title of the World Cup in 2027. The USWNT definitively occupies a place in a small category of elites at this stage of the four -year cycle, but they are certainly not alone. England’s victory over Spain in the final of the Sunday Women’s Euro demonstrates as much, while teams from different parts of the globe also have an argument.

With the countdown of the 2027 Women’s World Cup in progress, here is an overview of the teams that could challenge the USWNT for the title.

England

The consecutive European champions are an obvious inclusion on this list based on the end of recence, but England has become beautiful and really a real competitor since Sarina Wiegman took control of the coach tasks after the Olympics of Tokyo in Pandemia in 2021. Wiegman became specialist in major tournaments, leading his teams to the last six final. She participated, finding ways to gain in a variety of methods. This includes the grainy and little glamorous way for which England opted for the euro this summer and especially against Spain in the final, balancing this with an impressive resolution to come from behind in three of their six games in Switzerland. It is a perfect mixture of tangible and intangible that makes him a real competitor for their first World Cup title in 2027.

Spain

To complete an elite group which includes the USWNT and England is Spain, the winners by reigning from the World Cup. Sunday’s defeat in Switzerland may have been a setback for Roja, but that has not really decreased the fact that they are one of the best teams in the world. Their style focused on brand possession makes one of the most entertaining sides to watch and is extremely effective, allowing them to navigate to the semi-finals of the Euro before meeting obstacles. There will be real lessons to be withdrawn from the euro, especially with regard to defensive surpassing teams, but these are repairable problems. Given the foundation that they must solve these problems, Spain could still happen realistically in Brazil as a favorite to win the World Cup in two years.

Germany

The twice winners of the World Cup will probably arrive in Brazil who wants to develop a redemption arc after leaving the 2023 edition in the group phase, and will have the confidence to do so thanks to their recent performances. They won bronze in Paris last year and took place in the Euro semi-finals this summer, the latter almost improbable given a crisis and suspensions of injuries that tormented their race in Switzerland. Their ability to go to the penultimate stage of the female euro is a sign as strong as everything that Germany can compete and if they go to the World Cup at full power, expect them to have a chance to win their first title since 2007.

Brazil

The advantage in the field can transport teams far, whatever their potential, but the Brazil ceiling is greater than the average host nation. Like Hayes with the USWNT, head coach Arthur Elias inaugurates a new generation of players and already has an Olympic medal to show. Friendly matches will constitute most of their preparation, but at this early stage, they already have a 2-1 on the USWNT in April to boast. If they add more notable results to this list, as well as to find a way to win a fifth successive title by Copa America Feména this summer, they will undoubtedly be a team to keep an eye on 2027.
