White Sox honor Bobby Jenks with patches after pitcher dies at 44

The Chicago White Sox were in mourning on Monday evening, when they had played their first home game since the death of former launcher Bobby Jenks, who died at 44 years after fighting cancer.

The team, bearing a patch n ° 45 on their jerseys to commemorate Jenks, held a moment of silence after showing a video tribute to those of the stands on Monday evening in Rate Field.

Patch n ° 45 will be worn for the rest of the 2025 season.

It was a dark moment, but expected to honor Jenks after his death during the weekend.

Jenks announced in February that he was dealing with stadium adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer. He was in a hospital bed when he made the announcement at MLB.com after moving to Portugal to get closer to his wife’s family.

“We have lost an emblematic member of the White Sox family today,” said White Sox, Jerry Reinsdorf, in a statement.

“None of us will never forget that the ninth round of match 4 in Houston, all that Bobby did for the World Series 2005 champions and for the entire organization of the SOX during his stay in Chicago. He and his family knew that cancer would be his most difficult battle, and we will miss as husband, father, friend and teammate.

Although Jenks did not disclose his situation other than the diagnosis, he said that he hoped to be part of the celebration of the White Sox’s 20th anniversary of their 2005 World Series victory. It will be this Friday when Chicago faces the Cleveland Guardians.

Jenks played seven seasons in MLB, including six with the White Sox. He was very successful when he made his debut in 2005, winning an MPM of 2.75 in addition to 32 games while withdrawing 11.4 strikers for nine rounds.

Due to his consistency on the mound, Jenks would end up being closest to the team of the team series this season, and he launched in the four games while the White Sox swept the Houston astros to win everything.

Jenks then won consecutive All-Star offers in 2006 and 2007, while ending his career with an MPM of 3.53. The other team he played was the Boston Red Sox before retiring after the 2011 season.

Jenks also fought against alcoholism and drug addiction, which has effectively ended his career before becoming sober in 2012.

Jenks is survived by his wife and six children, four of whom from a previous marriage.
