Why Do Some Liberals Go Gaga Over So-Called Non-MAGA Republicans?

Some of these Republicans, like Barrett, Collins, and Murkowski, do not personally tend to run as non-MAGA Republicans. The media elevated them. But others consciously presented themselves as non-aligned or even hostile to Trump. Remember Roberts’ sanctimonious statement: “We don’t have Obama judges, or Trump judges, or Bush judges, or Clinton judges” after the president criticized court decisions against him? Barrett memorably declared that the high court was “not a bunch of partisan hacks” (while sharing the stage with Mitch McConnell!). Romney gave numerous interviews while in the Senate, praising himself for not supporting Trump as often as his colleagues. Cox knows it The New York Times and Harvard are very influential institutions on the left and seem eager to be presented by Democrats as intelligent and reasonable.
I call bullshit. When the history of Trump’s two terms is written, it will show that, aside from an occasional vote or statement, non-MAGA Republicans were not so different from the proudly MAGA Republicans with whom they served. Cassidy, Collins, Murkowski and Romney provided key votes for federal judges who rewrote the law to defend Trump’s sweeping actions and for Cabinet officials like Kristi Noem who are clearly unqualified for their jobs and have performed terribly. Roberts, Barrett and Kavanaugh joined Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, who are seen as more pro-Trump, in numerous rulings that defended Trump’s wild abuses of executive power. Roberts may be the author of the worst opinion of the Trump era, that of 2024. Trump v. United States ruling that essentially states that presidents can do anything while in office and not be prosecuted for it later.
THE Times published an article this week showing that the chief justice has begun asking court employees to sign nondisclosure agreements. For what? Because behind-the-scenes reporting on the high court demonstrates that, aside from Roberts’ pleas of innocence, it is full of Republican-aligned justices maneuvering to defend Republicans and Trump whenever possible. Unfortunately, Roberts is trying to limit reporting on his and his colleagues’ partisanship, instead of limiting the real problem: their excessive partisanship.
