Why I’d Choose the iPhone 17 Over the iPhone Air

Since the end of the launch event of the iPhone 17 of Apple, I thought of which of its non-pro phones that I would like to buy. The choice is not very simple this year, because the iPhone 17 and the iPhone Air have some compromises, and even if the iPhone air is a little more expensive, it is not necessarily better in everything. Here are the most important differences between the iPhone 17 and the iPhone Air, and why I think the first is probably the best choice, at least for me.

I care about the looks of my iPhone, even if my previous and less colorful iPhones suggest the opposite. I generally opted for subtle and dark shades, but this time, I want to change things a little and go for a colorful option. The iPhone 17 gives me a lot of good choices, with five different finishes. You can get this lavender phone, wise (a green shade) and blue mist, with the exception of usual white and black. This gives him five different colors overall, many of which are the type of vibrant I am looking for.

On the other hand, iPhone air is only available in four color variants: sky blue, light gold, cloudy and black white. Among these, I like the variants of black and white color, but the others are a little too subtle for me this year.

Due to this smaller screen, it is a little more compact, 5.89 inches high and 2.81 inches wide. You just need to be ready to bear that it is slightly thicker, at 0.34 inch.

Then there is weight. Even if the air of the iPhone is larger, it is lighter than the iPhone 17. The iPhone air weighs 5.82 ounces (165 grams), while the iPhone 17 weighs 6.24 ounces (177 grams).

For me, the big difference in construction quality is that iPhone air also has a ceramic shield at the back of the phone. The iPhone 17 still has glass on the back, which means that it is more likely to crack if you place it. The two smartphones use the 2 ceramic shield to protect the display.

iPhone Air has a faster processor, but a worst battery life

The iPhone Air is shipped with the same A19 Pro chip as iPhone 17 pro models. He has a GPU with 5 cores instead of that with 6 cores on the 17 pro, but if not, you should get similar iPhone air performance advantages. The iPhone 17 is delivered with the A19 chip. If you do not use your iPhone for heavy workloads such as modifying videos, filming many videos or reading graphics, you will probably not notice a big difference between the A19 Pro and the A19. But for people with high use, the additional processing power will be pleasant to have.

It is not a pure upgrade, however. The side effect of being thinner and lighter is a worst battery life, which is a big idiot with the iPhone air. Apple says that you will get up to 27 hours of video playback on a single load in the air of the iPhone, but 30 hours on the iPhone 17.

In addition, the iPhone 17 also invoices faster than iPhone air. Apple says that the iPhone Air supports wireless Magsafe to load up to 20W with a 30W adapter, while the iPhone 17 supports up to 25W with a 30 W load adapter. This means that the iPhone 17 will take care of wirelessly. It is a similar story for the wired load, with a warning. Depending on the Apple specifications, an iPhone air can charge from zero to 50% in 30 minutes with an adapter of 20W or more, while the iPhone 17 can do it in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter. It is faster, although we currently do not have any charging time for the basic iPhone 17 using a 20W charger, so this is not an exact comparison with air.

The iPhone 17 is better for photography

For me, the unique camera of the iPhone Air is a dealbreaker for a phone that costs $ 1,000. The 48 -megapixel sensor on the camera is probably good (Lifehacker has not yet been practical with it), but by getting the air, you miss the ultraid lens available on all other iPhone 17 models. This means no 0.5x shooting mode. The iPhone 17 also supports macro-photographs / video recordings and space / space videos, which is missing in iPhone air. Fortunately, the central front camera is exactly the same on the iPhone 17 and the iPhone Air, so you can take horizontal videos with itself by holding your phone vertically.

The iPhone 17 is cheaper than iPhone air

After examining all the specifications for the two phones, I lean towards the iPhone 17 above the iPhone air. I am not really obsessed with the slimming and lightness of my phone as much as it can do. I prefer to have more camera options and better battery life, and the iPhone 17 is better in both aspects, according to Apple’s own specification pages. The most positive, however, is the price of the iPhone 17, which is a complete $ 200 cheaper than iPhone air.

The iPhone 17 of 256 GB is at a price of $ 799 and the variant 512 GB costs $ 999. The iPhone Air has three storage variants, with the option from 256 GB to $ 999, 512 GB at $ 1,199 and 1 TB at $ 1,399. If I had to pre -order an iPhone today, I would most likely choose the iPhone 17 512 GB. This maintains the price around the $ 1,000 bar and gives me more storage to manage all my photos, videos, applications and games for years to come. As nice at the appearance of the iPhone Air, I think most people would be better to spend a little more for the best cameras of the iPhone 17 Pro, or simply save money and go with the well -balanced iPhone 17.
