President Donald Trump said Tuesday he believes New York City could soon elect a “communist” mayor and indicated he would prefer a Democrat take the reins of City Hall rather than a far-left candidate.

When asked at a White House news conference whether he would urge Republican Curtis Sliwa to drop out of the race, Trump did not endorse anyone but made clear his concerns about ongoing polling just two weeks before Election Day.

“Well, I looked at the polls and it looks like we’re going to have a communist as mayor of New York,” Trump said. “It will be very interesting. But here’s the good news. It has to go through the White House, everything goes through the White House. At least this White House goes through.”

Trump appeared to suggest that if Sliwa left the race, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo could narrow the gap with Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani, but he was not convinced that would change the outcome.

“If he [Sliwa] abandoned, he is not going to win. And that doesn’t look great for Cuomo either,” Trump said. “Maybe if he gave up, Cuomo would have a little chance. But not much. Because it looks like the lead is…it’s not a big lead, but it’s big enough that he can win.”

Pressed on whether he would be willing to meet with Mamdani if elected, Trump said he would.

“Yes, I will talk to him,” the president said. “I think I have an obligation to talk to him.”

Still, Trump has lamented what he sees as the city’s decline under progressive leadership.

“I love New York. I’ve always loved New York. I can’t believe something like this is happening,” he said. “I left New York and we had a mayor, [Bill] de Blasio, who was a disaster… New York was a hot city. And now it’s… it’s sad to see what’s happening, frankly.”

“With the communists in charge… look, just go back a thousand years. I mean, it’s been done many times, a thousand years. It’s never worked once. So it’s not going to work now.”

Mamdani, a state lawmaker and longtime member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), subscribed to calls to legalize prostitution and tax the wealthy.

His campaign received support from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and other national progressives like Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.
