The organizers decided to cancel El Grito Chicago, an event that attracted 24,000 people last year and was scheduled from September 13 to 14.
“It was a painful decision, but holding El Grito Chicago at that time puts the security of our community at stake – and it is a risk that we do not want to take,” said the event website. “While we are torn apart by this decision, when we brought back this celebration, our goal was to create a safe, affordable and family community festival for all.”
Anxiety in the third city in the country occurs after Trump deployed troops from the National Guard in Los Angeles and Washington DC. Illinois governor JB Pritzker said he was concerned about ice agents aimed at people during Mexican independence events.
