Windscribe promises users in Iran and Russia “solutions” to ongoing VPN crackdown — here’s everything we know

- Windscribe working on VPN connectivity solutions in Iran and Russia
- Expanding support for the AmneziaWG protocol is its ‘highest priority’“
- Iran and Russia adopt whitelisting system targeting more VPNs
Windscribe has announced new censorship-resistant features to help people in Russia and Iran who are having trouble using its service.
The VPN provider confirmed to TechRadar that it is rolling out support for the AmneziaWG protocol directly into Windscribe apps. It is a technology designed to bypass sophisticated deep packet inspection (DPI) techniques by imitating ordinary web traffic.
In a message shared on his Telegram, Reddit and
The vendor’s “highest priority” is to extend AmneziaWG support to native Windscribe applications. This VPN protocol, the company explains, has proven to be quite effective in bypassing government blocks.
What’s next for Windscribe users in Iran and Russia
Internet censorship in Iran has just entered a new phase as the government began rolling out a whitelisting regime, which is expected to target VPN connections even more aggressively.
Russia would also look to a similar framework. This is exactly why the Windscribe team is also working on a new system that the company says will “help” with these types of blocks.
Windscribe introduced the censorship-resistant protocol developed by AmneziaVPN in November, but only as a WireGuard configuration file for Pro or Build-A-Plan users.
Yet once integrated into the app, Windscribes guarantees that “everyone will have access,” including users of its free VPN service.
Speaking to TechRadar, Windscribe CEO Yegor Sak confirmed that this “will be released as soon as we receive positive feedback from beta users who are currently testing it for us.”
For our users in Iran and Russia, we are aware of VPN blocks in your regions and are working on a solution with the highest priority. In the coming days, we will begin beta testing app releases with a new connection method that has shown promising results. Hang in there.January 29, 2026
Despite the upcoming increase in unblocking censorship, AmneziaWG “will not bypass whitelisting techniques,” Sak told TechRadar, adding that the team is currently working on a separate solution to help combat whitelisting.
“The second system, entirely server-side, is under development and will contribute to this.”
In its message, Windscribe has indeed announced that it will soon release a beta Android APK so that users in Iran and Russia can test it and see its performance. The team is also working on a Windows version, which Windscribe hopes to release as soon as possible. The Mac and iOS versions will be next in development.
Device priorities reflect requests coming directly from the Windscribe community, which finds that the majority of Iranian and Russian users use Android (69%) and Windows (52%).
Windscribe’s work to strengthen its censorship-resistance capabilities could not come at a more critical time.
In such a setting, TechRadar experts expect that using VPN will become even more difficult, if not impossible. Whitelisting will simply make it easier to block VPNs.
After years of improving its censorship capabilities, Russia’s fight against VPNs is also entering a new phase. Experts in the country have already confirmed to TechRadar that most Western VPNs currently do not work in Russia, with blocking techniques becoming increasingly sophisticated.
What is certain now is that as increasingly authoritarian countries move from blacklist filtering to whitelist filtering, VPN providers must once again adapt to this new threat. The success or otherwise of Windscribe’s new solution could significantly mark the new direction of the sector.
