PHOENIX (AP) — Veteran opener Merrill Kelly has agreed to have the player join the Arizona Diamondbacks on a two-year, $40 million contract, according to a person familiar with the move.
The person was asked to remain anonymous by The Associated Press because the information has not been announced and is awaiting a physical examination.
The pitcher spent the first half and middle of his career with the Diamondbacks before moving to the Texas Rangers at the end of this year’s roster in July before becoming a free agent. He was good for other teams, finishing with a combined record of 12-9 and an efficiency rating of 3.52.
Kelly’s return to the desert isn’t a big surprise, considering he’s a Scottsdale native who came to college at Arizona State.
There is a key piece of the team that arrived at the Serie Mundial in 2023. You have a record of 12 games and an efficiency of 3.29 during this period, which allowed for masterful action in Game 2 of the Serie Mundial against the Rangers, which is the only game that the D-backs played in the Clásico de Otono.
The 37-year-old pelotero doesn’t have an abrumador repertoire, but he thrives on a mix of his throws that keep fighters off balance. He earned a solid MLB career debuting 30 years ago in 2019.
He was selected in the 2010 draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, but he was atascado in Triple A before opting to farm with the SK Wyverns of the Korean Béisbol Organization from 2015 to 2018, with a record of 48-32 with an efficiency of 3.86.
The Diamondbacks loved what happened and what they confirmed with a four-year, $14.5 million contract in 2018.
He agreed to a two-year, $18 million contract with Arizona in 2022 that will cover the 2023 and 2024 seasons and includes a club option for 2025 that the D-backs will exercise.
