Wisconsin hockey defenseman selected in first round of 2025 NHL draft

The Ottawa senators have selected the first -year defender of male hockey of the Wisconsin Logan Hensler with choice n ° 23 of the NHL 2025 draft Friday at the Peacock Arena of the Live.

With the selection, Hensler becomes the 19th representative of male hockey of all time to hear his name called in the first round of the NHL recovery.

"I am ecstatic," Hensler said after being drafted. "Large organization, and I am pumped to start with them. Long trip to come, but I am super excited that it is with them. It has always been one of my dreams, and being written by Ottawa is incredible. I am grateful for the opportunity and delighted to start."

At 6 feet 2 inches, Hensler recorded two goals and 10 assists for 12 points in total in 32 appearances as a real recruit. As the greatest university hockey player, Hensler’s efforts in his only season under Mike Hastings have earned him a place in the first year team of the All-Big Ten 2024-25.

Before wearing the Scarlet and the White, Henseler adapted to the US national team U18 in 2023-24 and accumulated four goals and 32 points in 61 games. The native of Woodbury, Minnesota, also won a gold medal during his skating for the United States in the Junior World Championship IIHF 2025 in Ottawa – the city where he will play at home in the NHL.

The selection of Hensler’s first round also stretches the Wisconsin sequence at least one player hearing his name called in the NHL recovery at 28 years old. Him, Luke Kunin (2016), Trent Frederic (2016), K’andre Miller (2018), Alex Turcotte (2019), Cole Caufield (2019), Dylan Holloway (2020), Corson Ceulemans (2021) and Charlie Stramel (2023) are the most recent draftees in the first round for 2015.

The star will join a team of senators who went 45-30-7 during the 2024-25 season, a campaign that ended with a defeat of the 4-2 series in the first round against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The appearance in the playoffs has marked the first post-season series for the franchise since the 2016-17 season and the first winning outing in almost a decade.
