Woman charged with killing pedestrian in Zion was allegedly livestreaming on TikTok while driving

A woman who now faces charges in a north suburban crash that killed a pedestrian was allegedly streaming live on TikTok while driving at the time of the crash.

Tynesha McCarty-Wroten was arrested Tuesday and now faces charges in the fatal November crash, the Lake County, Illinois, Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash happened Nov. 3 around 5:46 p.m. at the intersection of Sheridan Road and 33rd Street, Zion police said.

Police said the driver of a 2015 Ford Edge struck a pedestrian at the intersection.

The pedestrian died instantly. He was identified as Darren Lucas, 59, according to Zion police.

Police said the driver of the Ford remained at the scene and called 911.

On November 7, police opened an investigation into “a video that surfaced on social media related to this incident.”

“Investigators are currently following investigative leads to verify the validity of the video,” police said.

In an update Wednesday afternoon, Zion police said their investigation revealed that McCarty-Wroten was “live-streaming himself on TikTok” at the time of the fatal crash.

“In the days following the accident, numerous members of the public contacted Zion investigators to inform them of a TikTok video that allegedly showed Ms. McCarty-Wroten live driving at the time of the accident,” the police update reads in part. “The video was preserved and verified through an extensive investigation, including the execution of multiple search warrants and analysis of electronic data.”

The charges against McCarty-Wroten include reckless homicide and aggravated use of an electronic communications device, officials said.

The suspect appeared in court Wednesday morning, where she was remanded in custody pending trial.

McCarty-Wroten will be back in court Friday for another hearing.
