A woman and two children suffered burns when a manhole exploded and blew its heavy cast-iron lid off in lower Manhattan on Thursday, cops said.
The victims, including a 4-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, were injured in the explosion that erupted below Warren and Church Sts. in Tribeca shortly before 4 p.m., according to police.
The woman and kids suffered burns to their faces and shoulders, police said. They were taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Lower Manhattan in stable condition.
During winter, wet road salt can seep into manholes, corroding electrical cables’ insulation, causing sparks and gas that can then combust under pressure.
