Working with ICE to Do Arrests in Jail Will ‘Make the Situation Worse’

On CNN’s “The Source” Thursday, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) responded to a question about whether ICE’s cooperation with Minneapolis police would make things better because arresting people in jail is safer by saying that approach “is going to make the situation worse.”
Host Kaitlan Collins played a video of border czar Tom Homan saying, “Minneapolis, you’re a sanctuary city. If they let us into their damn prison and stopped being a sanctuary city, we could arrest the bad guy in the safety and security of a prison. …And the difference is, in places where it’s not a sanctuary, an agent can walk into a prison and arrest an illegal alien criminal. But when you release him into the community, now we have to send the whole team out because we have to arrest someone on their territory, the access – they have access to who knows what weapons. It makes the situation dangerous for the officer, it makes it dangerous for the outsider, and it certainly makes it dangerous for the community.
Collins then asked, “Maryland is not a sanctuary state. Obviously, as you know, Governor, do you think the administration would be right, if there was cooperation with the Minneapolis police?
Moore responded: “No, because what he just said was not only factually incorrect, it’s operationally insane, because what – here’s what we know in the State of Maryland is that we actually follow the Constitution. We make sure the laws are followed. And the people of my state know that we have no higher priority than public safety. The people who know – the violent offenders in the State of Maryland, they know that I have no patience for you. And what we also know is that in our state, if someone commits a violent crime, especially with a gun, we will have them in handcuffs in 24 hours. That’s why in the state of Maryland, we have one of the fastest declines in violent crime in the United States, violent crime has dropped by almost 50% since I’ve been governor. help make your community safer And so what we’re seeing – the bloviation that we just saw from Tom Homan is not only inaccurate, but, frankly, it’s going to make the situation worse.
