Why it matters
The competition serves a deeper objective beyond entertainment, pleading for the adoption of dogs and celebrating beauty in all animals, whatever their appearance.
The competition highlights rescue dogs and shelter animals, many of which have overcome significant challenges, including the history of the puppy plant. This platform helps to move the perception of the public on what makes dogs worthy of love and houses, potentially influencing adoption decisions nationwide. As the organizers point out, the event demonstrates that “Pedigree does not define the animal”.

What to know
The “ugliest dog in the world” competition hosts canines of all breeds and sizes with unconventional appearances, following rigorous health protocols. All participants must provide veterinary documents confirming their state of health before arrival, with additional veterinary checks on site made before the start of the competition, according to the details of the event. The day includes pre-contesting entertainment, pets on pet care and adoption resources, creating a complete celebration of animal welfare.
Participants often include animals with missing teeth, hanging languages, fur challenges, missing eyes and deformed limbs. Each competitor and manager occupy the front of the stage to present its unique beauty to judges, the media, hosts and fans in what the organizers describe as “a wonderful show of ceremonial and pride”.
Animal rescue and adoption groups keep stands on site, providing information on adoptable pets and sensitizing animals looking for houses.
