US Issues Update on New Hypersonic Weapon

The United States is expected to deploy a hypersonic weapon unit in late September, the army said, while the Pentagon rushes to fill the gap in this area with its main opponents.
The long -range hypersonic weapon (LRHW) should deploy its first operational battery by the end of the 2025 financial year, the army said in a written response to Nowsweek.
Each LRHW battery consists of four launchers equipped with a total of eight hypersonic missiles – which have a signaled beach of 1,725 miles – on the edge of a battery operations center (BOC) and an assistance vehicle, according to a Congress Research Service Report.
Why it matters
A hypersonic weapon can travel to Mach 5 or faster – more than five times the speed of sound. The main American rivals – Russia and China – as well as regional opponents such as North Korea and Iran say they have developed and deployed this new class of arms.
In July, the American army deployed the LRHW outside the continent in the United States for the first time, with two missile launchers participating in the Talisman 2025 exercise in Australia.
The United States also improves its defense against hypersonic threat, including upgrading of anti -missile defense radar systems, because this type of weapon can maneuver during theft – unlike ballistic missiles, which follow a predictable trajectory – which makes it difficult to intercept.
What to know
“In mid-2025, the tests continue, the control test strategy projecting the activity by exercise 2026,” said the US military Nowsweek Regarding the status of the LRHW, also known as the Black Aigle. The year 2026 takes place from October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2026.
According to the Congressal Research Service report, the LRHW was initially planned to align its first battery during the year 2023. However, the program was faced with delays and cancellations, which finally prevented the army from achieving its deployment objective.
The army also confirmed to Nowsweek that he temporarily deployed the LRHW in Australia. The weapon system was awarded to the third multi-domain working group based in Hawaii.

In a press release on Tuesday, the American army Pacific described the working group as having made a “revolutionary success” during the war game hosted in Australia thanks to the deployment of the LRHW, which was integrated into constructive mission threads throughout the exercise.
LRHW’s “long-term communication” capacities have been validated, and deployment highlighted the army’s ability to project power into Indo-Pacific theater.
“The Dark Eagle is really ready to leave,” said Captain Jennifer Lee, the LRHW unit commander known as Bravo Battery, adding that the exercise has demonstrated the capacities of the weapon system and has validated the preparation and the ability to defend us allies and partners.
What people say
US military captain Jennifer Lee, commander of the LRHW unit known as Bravo Battery, said in a press release on Tuesday: “The use of the ability of a black Eagle during the exercise underlines our commitment to strengthen alliances and improve interoperability with our partners in the Indo-Pacific region.”
Admiral of the US Navy Samuel J. Paparo, the commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, said in a press release on August 2: “The deployment of the LRHW system in Australia marks a significant achievement for American Indo-Pacific command, as it validates the army’s ability to deploy, position and exercise command and control (C2) of the system in an advanced environment.”
What happens next
It remains to be seen if the US military will lead another deployment abroad before the LRHW prepares its first operational battery.
