Coal-to-gas transition strains equity in China | Science

China’s transition from coal to natural gas, the most ambitious of its kind globally, has delivered substantial ecological benefits (1). Thanks to the “coal-to-clean” programs, clean heating penetration in northern China has climbed to nearly 83% (2), improving local air quality (3). However, heating costs have substantially increased, placing a disproportionate burden on rural households (4). China must address the inequities generated by the coal-to-gas energy transition.
