A mentally ill man pushed his girlfriend in front of a metro train last year was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Tuesday.

Christian Valdez, 36, had previously pleaded guilty to having pushed the victim in front of a train n ° 3 in the city center at Fulton St. station on March 9, 2024. The 29-year-old woman survived the incident, but her two legs were amputated.

“Christian Valdez will serve nearly two decades in prison following his conviction for having committed an act of potentially deadly domestic violence in our transport system,” said the Manhattan district prosecutor Alvin Bragg, in a press release.

Valdez and the victim argued on the platform for trains n ° 2 and 3 before pushing it in front of the metro

Emergency speakers pulled the train woman and precipitated her in a local hospital. In addition to needing the two amputated legs, she also suffered rib fractures and a blood clot in her lungs.

Valdez first fled in New Jersey and spoke with family members, but he returned to New York shortly after and was arrested with the same clothes he wore during the attack.

Family members said Valdez had suffered from schizophrenia and was in and out of various hospitals in the previous 18 years.

“He has always taken his medication, but he stopped,” Valdez’s niece told Daily News after last year’s attack. “He said he was taking him, but he was not. He was anxious and worried.”

Valdez also has a wide story of run-ins with the police. At The Shove, he was in parole for a stab in 2017 in which he injured a woman from the Bronx and his 4 -year -old daughter.

In this case, Valdez was sentenced to 8 years behind bars, but it was rating in January 2023. One of the conditions for his parole wore an ankle monitor, but he cut it one day before pushing his girlfriend in front of the metro.
