James Callis teases Claude’s uncertain future in Slow Horses season 6: ‘The jury’s out’

Warning: spoilers follow for Slow horses season 5.
Claude Whelan was forced to leave his top office job at the end of the fifth season finale after a series of incidents while handling several terrorist attacks, becoming the second boss to leave the role following Ingrid Tearney’s resignation at the end of season 3.
The dramatic end of Claude in Slow horses Season 5 suggests that this may be the last time we see an incompetent bureaucrat, but if you’ve read Mick Herron’s “Slough House” series of novels on which the series is based, you’ll know that the character returns again in the eighth book, “Bad Actors.”
But the Apple TV spy show isn’t taken directly from the pages of the books, meaning there’s no certainty that the storylines for Seasons 6 and 7 (both of which have been greenlit) will directly follow the stories in the corresponding book, especially with Will Smith stepping down as screenwriter and passing the baton to Gaby Chiappe for Season 6 and Ben Vanstone for Season 7.
Speaking to James Callis about Claude’s future on the show, the Battlestar Galactica And Castlevania The star said “the jury is out.” “I know what happens in the books, but the TV show isn’t necessarily the books,” he added.
While it doesn’t reveal much, when asked about future seasons, Callis considered the idea, theorizing how his character might react to the events of the final episode, which could serve as an explanation for the gaps we see between the character’s next appearance.
“You imagine a very different person emerging from all of this. I don’t really know if it would be a phoenix rising from the ashes, but there’s certainly a lot of ashes,” Callis said.
Does this mean he might learn more about Whelan’s return in Slow horses season 6 or future seasons beyond? Probably not, or at least, certainly not yet. Callis said as much, confirming: “The future Claude? I can’t talk about that, because I don’t know.”
