Top University Knowingly Rejected Professor’s Application For Being Israeli, Lawsuit Alleges

The Brandeis Center brought a complaint against the University of California (UC) Berkeley for allegedly denied a job request from the professor because it is Israeli.
Dr. Yael Nativ was a guest professor at UC Berkeley in 2022 and was invited by university professors to apply to another invited position for the 2024-2025 school year, the trial said. However, shortly after Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, Nativ was explicitly informed by the president of the department she applied for her request to be rejected because of the potential reaction of the hiring of an Israeli professor. “”[M]Y DEPT cannot welcome you for a course next fall, “said the president of the department at Nativ, according to the trial.” Things are very hot here [on campus] Right now and many of our graduate students are angry. I would put the department and you in a terrible position if you taught here.
After the incident, the University itself opened an investigation and noted that Nativ “was the victim of national discrimination of origin in violation of the non-discrimination policy of Berkeley,” said the trial. Despite the conclusions in September 2024, the university did not take any other measure to remedy the situation, according to the trial.

“Institutions very respected like Berkeley are proud to welcome individuals, academics and teachers from around the world, with variable history and expertise on each subject imaginable,” said Kenneth L. Marcus, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Brandeis Center and former Deputy Editor for Education, in a press release. “However, since Hamas’ attacks on October 7, professors, researchers and Jewish and Israeli academics like Dr Nativ were unfairly targeted, their work questioned and their livelihoods threatened due to the crawling anti -Semitism which has passed university campuses.”
Even before the anti-Israeli demonstrations flooded university campuses following the War of Israel-Gaza, UC Berkeley was investigated by the Biden administration for alleged anti-Semitism. In 2022, the Ministry of Education received a complaint that several groups of school students adopted the anti-Israelian boycott, the divestment and the sanctions of the statutes and prohibited pro-Israeli speakers from their chapters.
“For a university, denying the invitation of a professor respected simply because of its national origin is not only unpleasant, it is illegal,” continued Marcus. “And if the administration of the campus is not held to the same standards of responsibility as they hold their students, what prevents their students from acting on their own discriminatory beliefs? The vicious and illegal targeting of Israeli teachers and researchers is unfortunately a new disturbing trend that we see on a national scale that must stop. ”
