We live in a world where video game adaptations are experiencing a renaissance. Of course, there are definitely some that are terribly made and have no substance (looking at you, Super Mario Galaxy movie), but most modern adaptations have really taken over in terms of their quality of production.

The one I personally like is the acclaimed adaptation To fall. With an easily accessible Amazon Prime membership, I was able to enjoy some of the best action sequences and well-crafted plots in this adaptation. And as a fan of the games, I’m still very satisfied. However, I wondered how many other video games deserved the same treatment – and for that, I have a list of five.

The Ghost of Tsushima

The fights would be epic

Let me tell you a little story. When my now fiancé and I moved out of our small college apartment and into our adult apartment, we knew we had to play two games on our big screen TV first:The Last of Us Part II And Ghost of Tsushima. We got over the first one, but when we played the Ghost of Tsushima, our lives have been changed forever. And I’m not being dramatic.

The principle is simple: Jin Sakai, a samurai, seeks to protect Tsushima from the first Mongol invasion. There are many elements that would translate well into adaptation. The story itself is phenomenal and touches on morality, justice, ethics and so much more. This series could be Shogun-good level because it really makes the player question his choices.

The history and landscapes are fascinating. The game’s stunning graphics would look fantastic on TV and amaze those who haven’t played it. If HBO picked it up, I could already see a ton of people buying HBO Max subscriptions to watch it. It would be legendary.

There’s an anime in the works that’s based on this, according to Variety, but I can’t help but imagine what a live-action one would look like. A girl could dream.

resident Evil

A good adaptation

No, I’m not talking about any of the older adaptations; get that out of your head now. We are not going to address them. They don’t exist in this timeline.

I’m talking about a faithful adaptation of the first resident Evil games. No fallout. No new characters, except maybe Ethan from some of the later games. Just zombie mayhem with Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine and Leon fucking Kennedy. We have yet to get a good adaptation of him, and that, my friends, is simply a sin.

The game series primarily follows humanity’s struggle against the zombies created by the T-virus, which mutated and, of course, led to the downfall of humanity. There is a ton of lore in this franchise that would make a great spooky show that fans would love.

But every time an adaptation is made, it is always wrong and never well executed. I mean, if you like horror movies, you should like resident Eviland this, as a series, would be amazing.

Mass effect

Space series? Yes please

If we wanted something more sci-fi, Mass effect would be a great franchise to adapt into a TV show. The video game franchise primarily follows Commander Shepherd, a soldier trying to unite alien forces to stop the Reapers, a powerful race that could exterminate all human life.

I mean, aliens? Spaceships? Galactic battles? This could be an easy solution for one of the many streaming services currently available. But we didn’t get the Mass effect adaptation that we clearly need. Science fiction only became more popular with movies like Dune and shows like Stranger Things. Why not try that too?

Red Dead Redemption

It would be the ultimate western

I’m a fan of everything Rockstar does, and Red Dead Redemption is one of those franchises that I wish was a real show. In fact, it would make me like Western TV series.

Lucy in a vault from the Fallout series.

Hurry up before it’s too late!

The first game in the franchise follows John Marston, a former outlaw who must hunt down his former gang members to save his kidnapped family, but of course things go south, or take a drastic turn, or you get completely distracted in this open world landscape. The second game, after Arthur Morgan, is even better.

Adapting the first game for television would be excellent. It offers rich storytelling and many directions to explore. A partnership with a strong Western studio, like HBO or Paramount, would be ideal.

A fantasy that would rival Game of Thrones

You knew The Elder Scrolls series would be here. I’m a fantasy nerd, it’s in my blood.

I can’t even get into what Ancient scrolls that’s because each game is so different. But the basic idea is that the game takes place in the high fantasy world of Tamriel, where the player is a chosen hero who must fight through battles, monsters, and more to save people from impending doom. But every game is different, with a vast and incredibly detailed open world for you to get lost in.

But come on, is it a TV show? It would be gold. My goodness, the amount of knowledge you could use to create a good series – we would have seasons after seasons. I could see it now – hell, we could probably get a whole series in the meantime Ancient Scrolls VI to be released (when that happens).

What video games do you want as a TV series? It’s time to revisit these titles: anyone ready for a weekend of gaming?
