Scientists have discovered how the vegetable hormonal auxin helps the roots to bend and downwards – a process called gravitropism, even after having encountered obstacles in the soil.

Experts from the BioScience School of the University of Nottingham and Shanghai Jiao Tang University (SJTU), have identified how the auxin activates a specific gene, which strengthens cell walls on the lower side of the root. This reinforcement prevents growth below while allowing cells above developing, which makes the turn down. The results were published in Scientific advances.

Racine gravitropism, which shapes the root angle and the global root system, occurs because cells on the upper and lower sides of the roots develop differently in response to gravity.

Dr. Rahul Bhosale, associate professor of the School of BioSciences, who co-directed the study with Dr. Guoqiang Huang in SJTU, said: “So far, it has not been clear how to inhibits the expansion of the cells on the lower side of the roots. Our research resolves this long-standing question by showing that the growth of the axes comes from the cellular beer, explaining Biosynthes of the parish, the reinforcement of the walls The apparently opposed roles of the Auxin in the promotion and inhibition of cellular extension.

This research is expanding the previous work of the team showing that hormonal Abscisic acid (ABA), which helps plants responding to drought, changes root growth angles by affecting the auxin levels during water stress. Together, these discoveries give a clear image of how the roots feel their environment and adjust their growth management.

Dr. Bhosale added: “We already knew that the auxin is important for root gravitropism, but for a long time, we did not know what acts downstream of the auxin. This is what we discovered in this new research, which is important for a fundamental understanding of the root system.

“Understanding the role of hormones in these details opens up the possibilities for engineering crops that are resistant to stress and can overcome obstacles in the soil.”
