Why Clayton Kershaw decided to make resurgent 2025 season his last

Clayton Kershaw took a deep inspiration, grabbed the microphone with his left hand, then gleamed as he scored the room around him.

“This,” he said, “is weird.”

During his 18 seasons with the Dodgers, Kershaw was still suspicious of putting the spotlight. Now, dozens of teammates, coaches, managers, staff members and media members, as well as his wife, Ellen, and their four children, all sat down – testify to his official announcement that he ended his illustrious player career.

“I’m going to call him,” said Kershaw. “I’m going to retire.”

After years of fighting the decision, and in the end of playing for the Dodgers in his 37 -year season, the future left -hander of the fame of fame finally made his decision to move away.

He thought it was time and could do it well.

“Upon entering the season, we knew in a way it was going to be that, so I didn’t mean anything in case I have changed my mind,” he said. “But during the season, how grateful I am to have been healthy and go out on the mound and to be able to present, I think it just made it obvious that it was a good point of sending. And it was. I had the best time this year. It was an explosion.”

Although Kershaw has recognized that getting out of his “own conditions is a strange thing to say”, that’s exactly what this season has offered to triple Prix Cy Young and the former MVP winner.

“Few people have this opportunity,” he said. “Being able to launch, and not to launch terribly … was super special.”

Kershaw, of course, was much more than “not terrible” in what will be his last season in the big league.

By entering what was suddenly the last start at home in the regular season of his career on Friday, the left-hander was 10-2 with an MPM of 3.53, ranking second from the victory team and third in sleeves launched.

It did not matter that he missed the opening month and a half recovering surgeries from the feet and knees offset. Or that its rapidly decreased ball did not succeed in an average of 90 MPH.

In the 18th year, Kershaw succeeded “just about cunning and heart”, as described by manager Dave Roberts. This is why, Thursday, Kershaw continued to refer this season as the best end he could have imagined. He is not injured, feeling rather as well as in the years thanks to changes in his training routine. He does not struggle like last season when he posted an MPM of 4.50 on only seven departures between shoulder and foot / knee surgeries.

“The most difficult is the teammates, so I’m not going to even look at you guys,” Kershaw said. “Just you sit in this room, you mean so much for me. We have so much fun. I’ll miss it.

“The match in itself, I will miss a lot, but I will be good without that,” he added. “I think the difficult part is the feeling after a victory, celebrating with you. It’s quite special.

“Very good,” he continued trying to come together. “I’m done with that.”

Then Kershaw turned to his four children and his wife who is currently pregnant with their fifth. He shared a message from Ellen and how she knew the 18th birthday of Kershaw of her so-called perch in the stands.

“She cried for really difficult losses and really incredible milestones,” he said. “She watched our children fell in love with the match, with the players and watch me tape.”

A few moments later, while Kershaw read a biblical verse on the work “with all your heart”, his voice started to tremble again.

“I’m really not sad, I’m really not,” he insisted. “I’m really at peace with that. It’s just emotional. I tried to keep it together. ”

However, when he was asked once again what made this season so special, Kershaw left sentimental again.

“It’s just a big group of guys – look, everyone is here today, it means a lot – and I think we are all back,” he said. “It is not always very good for everyone, and the only people who understand who are the people of the clubhouse. Baseball is a difficult game. It is not easy to play. So I think I have a group of guys together, and in a way understanding this and being together, the most important.”

Kershaw then tried to get back to home towards the rest of the season, saying that he is “grateful that we were going to have another month to play”.

After that, his future plans will be simple, his days which should be occupied by the practices of the League and the dance recitals and all the other activities of his children in Texas.

“I’m going to do this for a while, that’s for sure,” he said.
