The end of evening host Abc, Jimmy Kimmel, having recently resisted the temporary suspension of his program, published a photo of himself on Tuesday with the late Norman Lear, who was devoted by former President Richard Nixon as one of his “enemies”.
After days to be at the center of a national political storm on freedom of expression and the differences between “culture of cancel” and “culture of consequence”, Kimmel posted a photo of him with Lear on Instagram with the words “missing this guy today”. He marked his first public comments since he was withdrawn from the air last week and came a few hours before his return Tuesday evening.
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” had been withdrawn from the air after Kimmel’s remarks on the alleged assassin of Charlie Kirk triggered the indignation, a veiled threat of the Federal Commission Commission (FCC) and two main owners of ABC affiliation who released its program across the country. Kimmel had falsely suggested that the alleged killer was a supporter of Maga, although he would have said that he had been out of his context.
Walt Disney Company announced on Monday that after “thoughtful conversations” with Kimmel, he decided to return the show to the airwaves. Sinclair and Nexstar, two main ABC affiliation owners, will however continue to preempt the show.

Lear was a legendary screenwriter and producer who died in 2023 at the age of 101. Its sitcoms were massively popular at the time and discussed on social subjects, in particular racism, homosexuality and war. Some of his successful shows he created and produced include “All in the Family”, “The Jeffers” and “Good Times”.
Lear was also known to have appeared on the list of political opponents of Nixon in a variety of industries and institutions.
The list became well known during the surveys of the Senatorial Committee of Watergate in June 1973, when the lawyer for the White Chamber of the time, John Dean, revealed a memo entitled “Treating with our political enemies”.
In a 2016 interview with Democracy Now!, Lear compared Nixon to Donald Trump, then candidate for the presidency.

The cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel is expanding a fierce celebrity split in Hollywood
Kimmel has become one of Trump’s most ferocious criticism in the end of the evening circuit and even collected fundraising for the Democratic Party.
His quarrel with Trump and the conservative movement came at a unique moment when many argue that the end-of-evening talk show format sees his twilight, with streaming and podcasts becoming alternative options for entertainment.
Kimmel himself has evolved over the years, from a more apolitical actor to another focused on viewers of the left and potentially alienating stroller.
