Americans feel the pain of Trump’s economic ‘wrecking ball’

A new survey released Monday shows that a growing number of Americans are seriously concerned about their ability to find jobs as President Donald Trump’s economy has deteriorated significantly.
The NORC Center for Public Affairs poll for The Associated Press found that 47 percent of Americans said they were “not very” or “not at all” confident they could find a job if they wanted to. This represents a 10% increase from November 2023, when President Joe Biden was in office.
Trump campaigned in 2024 bashing Biden on the economy, even though data on all fronts showed a significant recovery from the economic mess he inherited in 2021. And economic improvement is one of the many things that Trump has failed to keep his promises, after promising to do so “from day one.”

One of the biggest sources of consumer fear is the cost of electricity, with 36% of Americans citing it as a “major” concern. This figure comes as Trump pushed for artificial intelligence must be deregulated, even if experts have warned that the new technology is a large consumer of electrical energy and could increase energy costs.
“Donald Trump has taken a wrecking ball to the economy with his messy trade war and disastrous policies — and working families are paying the price,” said Kendall Witmer, rapid response director for the Democratic National Committee. said in a statement.
She added: “The costs of everything from groceries to electricity have risen, and good-paying jobs have become almost impossible to find. He has sold out American workers in order to line the pockets of the rich and powerful, while trying to tighten his grip on power.”
Trump and congressional Republicans have pushed an agenda that has resulted in a government shutdown, harming not only federal workers but also businesses that rely on federal spending. At the same time, Trump set aside funds for the brutal campaign of harassment and detention against immigrants.
Perhaps most devastating – and avoidable – is the toll that Trump’s idiotic tariffs have taken on the economy. Prices have increased the cost of doing business without being able to generate the number of trade agreements promised by Trump, particularly with China. The Trump effect is now harming a wide range of industries, especially agriculture.
This doesn’t even take into account Trump’s continued actions to turn the federal government into his own personal authoritarian tool. He used the government to try censor his critics, independent bully thought on campus, and pursue political opposition.
No wonder millions took to the streets this weekend to participate in the national “No Kings” protests. And with economic conditions worsening, the protests are unlikely to stop anytime soon.
