A Tesla traveling the wrong way collided head-on with a dump truck in Scottsdale on Dec. 2, sending both drivers to the hospital, police said.

The crash happened shortly before noon in a residential area near Cactus Road and 74th Street. Scottsdale officers restricted traffic around the scene of the large crash, according to the Scottsdale Police Department on X.

Officer Aaron Bolin, a spokesman for the Scottsdale Police Department, said a Tesla was heading east on Cactus Road when it veered left across the center reservation and into the westbound lanes, striking the dump truck.

The impact sent the dump truck to the left, where it sideswiped a Nissan Maxima before continuing into the eastbound lanes and crashing into the wall of a house, according to a preliminary police investigation.

The driver of the Tesla and the driver of the dump truck were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to Bolin.

Scottsdale police said impairment and speed did not appear to be factors, and investigators believed the Tesla was traveling at the posted speed limit.

The Tesla driver was cited for driving left of the center reservation under Arizona Revised Statute 28-721(A) and for failing to control speed to avoid a collision under ARS 28-701(A), according to Bolin.

The Tesla’s driving style at the time of the crash was still under active investigation, Bolin said.
