T-Mobile Says You Can Switch in Just 15 Minutes. I Tested That Claim

Credit the pink Pony Club. Until early October, I was happy with my prepaid phone service. I migrated my cell service to budget prepaid plans almost a decade ago and have used a half-dozen services since, including Mint and Boost.
Then I took my 10 year old daughter to see a Chappell Roan concert. My phone was on Visible Wireless at the time and my traffic was completely deprioritized at an event where apparently 30,000 people were simultaneously posting stories and snaps in front of me. I ended up standing in a field for four hours without a drop of internet.
T-Mobile recently announced a new service that lets you switch to the carrier in just 15 minutes, along with same-day delivery of your new smartphone. This was very appealing, as was the idea of not being thrown to the back of the line the next time I wanted to use my phone at a crowded event. I was expecting better coverage and hoping for an easy change, so I gave it a try.

Change in about 15 minutes
As someone who switches between several cheap prepaid carriers every few years, I’m used to fighting with my cell service provider. I’ve spent hours and hours trying to transfer my lines or unlock a device I paid cash for so I could use it abroad (there’s a reason we only recommend buying unlocked smartphones). I was pushed beyond Karendom and even resorted to filing a complaint with the FCC regarding a carrier’s practices. I’ve always been frustrated by the difficulty of switching carriers and have come to believe that it’s a pain by design.
T-Mobile’s new 15-minute switching feature only works if you use the carrier’s app, and I wanted to discuss my options, so I called. The change process took a little longer over the phone (27 minutes), but was painless. The T-Mobile sales rep wasn’t pushy about upsells and was able to use a screen mirroring feature on the app to show me where to click or read. I found this helpful, and it’s the only way I can advise an elderly person like my mother to interact with a cell phone carrier.
I opted for the mid-tier Experience More plan, which for $85 per month offers unlimited data and calling, plus 60GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data and free data in Canada, Mexico, and several other countries. Plus, I can text and use the internet on a plane. It also comes with free Netflix.
Next day pickup
My iPhone 15 Pro Max had a cracked screen for almost a year after dropping it during an NFL playoff game (it was in a case at the time, and I hate cases), so I was ready for a new device. This bright orange iPhone 17 Pro is calling to me. I was not eligible for an exchange given the condition of my old phone, so I looked at the promotions offered by the operator.
T-Mobile is currently offering the standard iPhone 17 for free with a 2-year contract. I didn’t want the standard model, but I was happy to learn that the carrier could take that same $35 per month and apply it to the Pro Max, meaning I got the device I wanted for $15 per month on the 2-year contract. I was facing a $32 increase switching from Visible, but I got $35 in monthly credits on my device interest-free, meaning I actually get $3 back per month. Next time I attend a concert, I can scroll through the threads between sets like a normal person and maybe even post a few selfies.
T-Mobile’s other great point of pride is same-day delivery to your device. Unfortunately, while I could have gotten it with the standard iPhone 17 or standard iPhone 17 Pro, same-day delivery wasn’t available for the Pro Max in orange in my area (especially since I completed my order around 6 p.m.). Instead, I arranged for a next day pickup at a local T-Mobile store. The next morning when I checked my email, the phone was ready to be picked up. I drove 1.2 miles to the T-Mobile store, showed them my driver’s license, and was home in 15 minutes. Then I had to set up my new phone and port my number. In total, I had less than an hour of my time devoted to the switch.
Although the particulars of my situation meant that the entire process took less than 15 minutes with same-day delivery, I’m happy to report that the switchover process was one of the most painless experiences I’ve had with a carrier. Plus, apparently I can now get a free Slurpee starting July 11th every month as part of the promotion.
