A Somali-run daycare in Minneapolis, Minnesota, says someone broke in and stole “important documents,” including child registration information, employee documents and checkbooks.

Nasrulah Mohamed, 20-year-old manager of Nokomis Daycare, told reporters the break-in happened Tuesday, with the suspect entering through the kitchen near the back of the facility before damaging a wall and entering the company’s office, the New York Post reported.

Mohamed blamed the break-in on a viral video by citizen journalist Nick Shirley showing alleged fraud at nearly a dozen Minnesota daycares.

“This is devastating news, and we don’t know why this is targeting our Somali community, when a video made by a particular individual allowed all of this to happen,” Mohamed said, adding that the daycare had received “hateful” and “threatening” messages in recent days.

“It’s scary and exhausting,” he said, before calling Shirley’s report “fake.”

Nokomis Daycare is not one of the facilities included in Shirley’s video, which has been viewed more than 132 million times on X to date.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), linked to Hamas and designated by several states as a criminal terrorist organization, rushed to Nokomis’ defense in a statement Wednesday.

“This disturbing incident raises serious concerns about the real-world consequences of anti-Somali, anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim hate speech circulating online,” said Jaylani Hussein, executive director of CAIR’s Minnesota chapter. “When misinformation and dehumanizing rhetoric about an entire community spreads unchecked, acts of intimidation and vandalism become more likely. Even though this daycare had no connection to the viral video circulating online, it was still targeted. This raises serious questions about whether bias played a role in the vandalism, and these questions deserve thorough investigation by law enforcement authorities.”

The Minneapolis Police Department told Fox9 the daycare reported the break-in on the morning of Dec. 30 and initial reports indicate the facility was burglarized overnight while it was closed. Police said daycare staff informed them of what was allegedly stolen from the building Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred as at least $1 billion in fraud was uncovered in Minneapolis,”including fraudulent payments for food, housing and child care, with warnings from the U.S. Attorney’s Office that the real figure could reach $9 billion,” the Job reported.

So far, 92 people have been arrested in connection with this project, 80 of whom are Somali immigrants.

President Donald Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced Tuesday evening a freeze on all child care payments in Minnesota — which totaled $185 million in 2025 — until state officials provide proof that the payments are legitimate.
