If Ric Grenell is the normal gay guy, I’m glad I’m not

In the interview inducing vomiting, he remembers Melania Trump Generosity (?), rails against cancel culture (where does that leave us “abnormal gays?”), And assures us that in spite of being gay, he is one of the vouchers. You see, if you don’t have the point yet, Grenell is the very model of a “normal gay”.

Unsurprisingly, Grenell is not the first conservative man linked to Donald Trump To use the term “normal gay”. You see, that is why all this about “normal gays” is. It’s just a big farce. As my grandfather could have said: “What is Holy Hell try to say?” What is a “normal gay”? Is he someone wearing chino and a button button, has a pit-ball and hot dogs and grilling burgers on July 4 while listening to Led Zeppelin?

Or is it someone who conscientiously removes any puff of pride, ceremonial or protest and kisses instead being the favorite diversity of GOP? AWW, I think I just hit something!

Because “normal gay” is a term that exists only in the closed wet dreams of the Christian conservatives, who are among their closed ranks, the clergy and the dedicated husbands, all trying to prove that the republican party is not antigay, it is just anti-all that makes gay interesting, fun and well, normal!

Because if “normal” means marriage and family life, well, the extreme right is still very Recording against homosexuals adopting and two people from Same sex get married. If “normal” means masculinity, are we talking about the old trope of the “soft wrist”? Do we measure the gay identity by the way we walk, how we laugh or if we can change a tire without huming Judy Garland?

I spent years trying to be a “normal man” and, by extension, a “normal gay”. I tried to deepen my voice, to wear the most the most most most fashionable fashion, to avoid visual contact or to check other guys and to speak constantly about sports. Complete confession: I like sport, but I also do a lot of cheerful men just as abnormal.

Well, I did not succeed. Finally, I realized that there is no “normal gay”, because there is no “normal guy” or something normal elsewhere. Each man, gay, law or Grenell, is his own constellation of oddities, contradictions and complexities. Being so-called normal is about as abnormal as anyone can be.

And frankly, if Grenell thinks that it is the face of normality, I would like to draw your attention to his serving as a racing boy from Trump to the Kennedy Center, or his jetsting PR disguise waterfalls as diplomacy. There is nothing “normal” in his servile devotion to a man who prohibited trans people from serving in the army, eliminated the mentions of LGBTQ people + government websites and applauded anti-LGBTQ + state houses at the Supreme Court.

It is rich, too rich, even for Grenell, which clings desperately to the approval of the political movement most hostile to LGBTQ +rights, while trying to draw a line between him and the rest of us.

And JD Vance? He thinks he’s normal? He is a man who insults anyone who is different from him and who quickly changed anti-Trump (it is normal) to kisse it of Trump’s ass (it is certainly not normal). His famous comments from “cat cat” make him present himself as the strangest guy in the play, any room. All guys who are going to talk about degrading women and cats … Well, you know where I’m going. Not normal – at all!

The only “normal” thing about Grenell and Vance is their hunger to be able, their contempt for authenticity and their conviction that visibility must be controlled for the comfort of straight white men who culminated at university.

If the choice is between being “normal” like Grenell and Vance or being “abnormal” as, well, whoever lives honestly, I take an anomaly. I’m going to take a guy with a soft wrist and guys with rainbow flags that sing a show and love a good drag brunch. I’m going to take the queerness in all its glory without excuse, embarrassing and Sashaying.

Because what Grenell and Vance do not understand and will never do it is that there is power to be outside the lines. It is proud to reject a definition of “normal” which only serves the powerful. And there is something beautifully subversive to refuse to be anything other than your full, fabulous, deeply abnormalL self.

So, Ric, if you are normal, the “normal gay”, then thank God, I don’t try to be you!
