Washington Post Lays Off Amazon Beat Reporter Amid Mass Cuts

Among the many layoffs The Washington Post announced Wednesday was journalist Caroline O’Donovan, who covers technology companies and corporate responsibility with a focus on Amazon, the company founded by Job owner Jeff Bezos.
O’Donovan, who had worked at the newspaper since 2022confirmed the news in a post on. His last story, published on January 28, spoke ironically about the Amazon situation. own layoffs last week, putting at least 16,000 employees out of work.
The day before, she wrote about technical executives and their relationship with President Trump following the murder of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis by federal agents, notably beginning the article by mentioning how Amazon CEO Andy Jassy attended a screening of a documentary about Melanie with Trump the same night Pretti was killed.
O’Donovan also recently traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota to cover the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. Her coverage of Amazon seemed to have slowed down slightly in mid-2025, but she was still writing about the company just before her firing.
Since Bezos took over the newspaper in 2013, critics have raised questions about how the Job would cover his commercial holdings, foremost among which online retail giant Amazon, and whether the billionaire would seek to influence the JobIt is blanket. While the Job was critical At times, for failing to disclose Bezos’ ownership in some articles about Amazon, and his coverage of Amazon seemed lacking in some cases, he never seemed to give the company a free pass.
This could change now that there is no longer a dedicated journalist Job covering Amazon. What could also change is the paper’s relationship with President Trump, who has softened considerably during Trump’s second term. One thing is certain: One of America’s leading newspapers is now considerably smaller and weaker than it was at the start of the week.
