According to Wilder, all children were born in the United States and are American citizens, born from parents of Africa, South America and Mexico.

“It’s all about civic. If you don’t know your rights, they will trample them,” Wilder on the cloth told. The coach also expressed his shock and dismay at the number of people who looked at the interaction but who failed to intervene.

“There were people who watched and the agents told them to go back, that they would be arrested for interfering, and not to take photos,” Wilder at RAG told. “The worst part is that the six or seven people watching, followed their orders!”

“I never thought it would happen in the Upper West Side in New York,” Wilder told Eyewitness News. “All this, until it happens to you, you don’t know? It happened to us.”

Wilder has since changed the location and training times for his team, but some children and their parents were so shaken by the event that they did not return to training.

“I knew they could stop me, but I knew they couldn’t keep me,” he said. “My thing is that I am African-American, and most of my children are Latin and black, so everything depended on how to bring these children back.

Wilder was “the only thing that was held between these children of Riverside Park and a Florida detention center deeply buried in the Everglades,” wrote Linda Rosenthal, member of the Upper West Side, in a newsletter earlier this month. Rosenthal told Eyewitness News that Wilder was right to intervene and had the legal power to do so.
