An alien invasion may sound like science fiction, but a scientist has revealed what the terrifying consequences of an encounter could be.

Professor Avi Loeb, director of Harvard University’s Galileo Project, says our first encounter with an alien invader won’t be like science fiction movies like ET or War of the Worlds.

Rather than a biological, flesh-and-blood alien, Professor Loeb explains that we are more likely to be encountered by an “AI-guided technological device”.

The arrival of such a device would pose a “potential threat to all Earthlings”, he claims, triggering political, economic and spiritual chaos throughout the world.

Professor Loeb told the Daily Mail that “the stock market could collapse due to uncertainty over the impact of this meeting on the future of humanity.”

Likewise, the fact that aliens’ technology would likely surpass ours would not only be humiliating to human intelligence – but would also make their technology a grave threat to humanity.

Professor Loeb said in a blog post: “It would be foolish of me to predict what this blind date of interstellar proportions might look like.

“One thing is clear: we need to observe our partner to learn more about their qualities and intentions and make sure they are not a serial killer.”

Professor Loeb suggests that aliens will not invade Earth in biological form, in part because of the great distances between our planet and the nearest habitable worlds.

Even the nearest habitable world, Proxima Centauri b, is located 4.2 light years from Earth.

The preference for technology over living organisms also reflects trends in our own space exploration efforts, which tend to use robotic probes rather than human crews.

If one of these artificial emissaries arrived on Earth, Professor Loeb suggests that its mere presence would send shockwaves through human society.

Just as astronomers shook the world by showing that Earth was not at the center of the cosmos, an encounter with extraterrestrials would alter humanity’s sense of importance.

“I wouldn’t consider this a crisis but rather a realization that we are not at the top of the food chain, from a cosmological point of view,” Professor Loeb told the Daily Mail.

It would not only be religious believers who would be psychologically shaken by this revelation.

Secular individuals will also be shaken by the realization that extraterrestrial technology is far more advanced than ours.

How do you think humanity would react if we suddenly discovered that aliens are much more advanced than us?

Professor Loeb says this will come from understanding that “there is a more accomplished brother or sister in our family in intelligent civilizations.”

Likewise, meeting our technologically advanced cosmic brothers and sisters would have a “profound effect” on international geopolitics.

“This would pose a potential threat to all Earthlings, because we are all in this together,” says Professor Loeb.

However, this common threat could actually help bring Earth’s divided nations together in collective self-defense.

Professor Loeb says: “An encounter with extraterrestrial technology could bring together all humans on Earth in the same way that a stranger knocking on the door calms arguments between family members in the room.

“It will definitely take us to a better place by bringing a much-needed sense of humility and a shift in priorities towards space exploration and cooperation between humans, since we are all in the boat.”

However, what the aliens would want from us or how they would treat our civilization depends on the nature of the aliens involved.

Professor Loeb has previously suggested that extraterrestrial civilizations could send technological probes into our solar system as part of a “reconnaissance mission”.

Given that Earth has a stable atmosphere, liquid water, and is in the habitable zone of its star, it is natural that civilizations would want to investigate.

In exactly the same way that human astronomers study exoplanets from Earth, extraterrestrial scientists might simply examine Earth out of curiosity or in search of a new home.

But it is also possible that an extraterrestrial civilization has more malicious plans towards our planet.

For example, Professor Loeb proposed the idea that ancient visitors could have polluted the atmosphere enough to trigger the Permian extinction, the largest extinction event in Earth’s history.

About 252 million years ago, 96% of marine species were killed off by global warming that left ocean creatures unable to breathe.

While the majority of scientists agree that this is due to greenhouse gases from volcanic eruptions, Professor Loeb suggests there could be a technological explanation.

Although these ideas may seem far-fetched, Professor Loeb insists that these theories should be treated like any other scientific hypothesis and tested through rigorous investigation.

WHAT IS THE FERMI PARADOX?

The Fermi Paradox asks why, given the 200 to 400 billion stars and at least 100 billion planets in our galaxy, there have been no signs of extraterrestrial life.

The contradiction is named after its creator, the Italian physicist Enrico Fermi.

He first asked the question in 1950.

Fermi thought it was too extraordinary that a single extraterrestrial signal or engineering project had yet to be detected in the universe – despite its immense vastness.

Fermi concluded that there must be a barrier that limits the rise of intelligent, self-aware, technologically advanced space colonizing civilizations.

This barrier is sometimes called the “Great Filter”.

Italian physicist Enrico Fermi conceived the so-called Fermi Paradox in the 1950s, which explores why there are no signs of extraterrestrial life, despite 100 billion planets in our galaxy.

If the main obstacle to colonizing other planets is not in our past, then the barrier that will prevent humanity from reaching other worlds must lie in our future, scientists theorized.

Professor Brian Cox believes that the scientific and technical advances necessary for a civilization to begin conquering the stars will ultimately lead to its destruction.

He said: ‘One solution to the Fermi Paradox is that it is not possible to rule a world that has the power to self-destruct.

“It may be that the growth of science and engineering inevitably outpaces the development of policy expertise, leading to disaster.”

Other possible explanations for the Fermi Paradox include the fact that intelligent alien species exist, but lack the technology to communicate with Earth.

Some believe that the distances between intelligent civilizations are too great to allow any two-way communication.

If two worlds are separated by several thousand light years, it is possible that one or both civilizations will disappear before a dialogue can be established.

The so-called Zoo hypothesis claims that intelligent extraterrestrial life exists, but deliberately avoids contact with life on Earth to allow its natural evolution.
