The Wolbachia-Singapore project announces the results of a two-year study during which WolbachiaInfected male mosquitoes were released to reduce dengue infections. Male mosquitoes do not bite humans, but when they mate with wild female mosquitoes that lack the natural properties Wolbachiathe eggs do not hatch. The number of infected mosquitoes fell by 77% and the risk of symptomatic dengue fever by 70%.
South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare announces that Roche and Eli Lilly will invest nearly $1 billion in the biopharmaceutical industry. Roche’s $484 million is aimed at establishing an ecosystem for global clinical trials and strengthening R&D for innovative medicines, and Lilly’s $500 million is partly to launch an incubator in collaboration with Samsung Biologics housing up to 30 companies.
