Trump’s comments are abhorrent, given the steps he and the Republican Party have already taken to intervene in the midterms and beyond. They grew during the middle of the decade electoral redistricting which deprives Democrats of their rights and Black Americansthey continued to spread Holocaust denial conspiracies from 2020, and they installed people who support these conspiracies in local governments and election commissions across the country.
Meanwhile, Americans’ confidence in elections will only weaken. Rumors of ICE being deployed at the polls will grow, thanks to Republicans like Steve Bannonscaring many people of color away from the polls. The Democrats will have to propose not only a legal but forceful strategy that ensures elections remain free and fair.
