I write as the mother of a son who suffered from psychosis and had to battle with mental health services to get him the treatment he needed. I am impressed and amazed by Celeste Calocane (The mental health system is broken, says mother of Nottingham triple killer, May 14). She insisted the system was flawed, and her testimony made that clear.

On top of everything she endured trying to navigate the system, fearing for the life of the son she loved while he was so ill and the terrible outcome that followed, she then had to go through the ordeal of being questioned about her role in not preventing the outcome. It was horrible to watch, and she handled it so well and so strongly. She is an impressive and exceptional woman.

I’m very grateful for what she told the president at the end, that the system was broken. I long for his words and evidence to be heeded and implemented.

I am grateful that Celeste had the courage to endure this ordeal and speak out so forcefully, challenging the system, which is failing not only patients but also those of us who care for them, and of course the general public, who may have to endure terrible consequences such as the Nottingham deaths.

If the system continues to fail, this terrible pain will continue.
