A vaccine against the Ebola virus, currently raging in central Africa, could be developed within 100 days, an international disease response group promised Friday.

The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) is funding the development of new vaccines and studying potential candidates for the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is currently no known vaccine.

Jane Halton, chair of the CEPI board, highlighted the urgent need for a vaccine, saying the number of cases recorded so far may be just the tip of the iceberg and a rapid response is essential.

“I can guarantee you that we will be able to respond more quickly than we were five years ago,” Halton told reporters in Geneva, Switzerland.

“Will we get there in 100 days? Maybe that’s a big step forward. We’re now at hundreds of cases and hundreds of deaths, but the truth is the real numbers are much higher than that.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern over the weekend, as Breitbart News reported.

The outbreak has resulted in 160 suspected deaths out of 670 suspected cases, of which 61 have been confirmed, according to data from the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) released Thursday.
