Map Shows Most Popular Cat Names in Every U.S. State

A recent survey has identified the most popular cat name in each American state and a name appeared 21 times.
For a second consecutive year, the name Luna dominated the list of the most popular cat names in the country among men and women. This observation comes from Trusthusisitters, a sitting platform for pets, which plunged into the data of 100,000 dogs and cats registered with the community by July 2025.
The platform then broke its results according to each state. Luna became the first name in 21 states. This is from the 14 states in 2023 with Luna as a superior cat name, Nowsweek previously reported.
The other names winning the title of the most popular cat name of a state include Charlie, Lucy and Bella, who have all ranked among the first 4 in the general classification. Lily, Loki, Max, Star, Oscar, Zelda, Pepper, Callie, Gus, Kitty, Olive, Olivia, Jack and Chloé, are among the other popular nicknames.

Although name ideas can come from anywhere – food, drinks, pop culture – the survey discovered that parents of pets were often inspired by cities and states.
The five best names related to the city for pets, among cats and dogs, were Aspen, Rio, Phoenix, Salem and London.
States such as Colorado, New York and Texas have inspired owners to make a name decision, their pet names being in the top 100.
In the rocky state of Colorado, names on the theme of trees, such as Oakley and Maple, honored the wooded paths of the state. Wildlife references have also become popular in the state. This includes moose, male and bear.
New York pet names paid tribute to its culinary scene and entertainment, with Biggie, Cannoli and Brooklyn listing the most popular names.
Texans also did not resist the inspiration of the solo star state. Buck, Bandit, Rowdy and Cowboy have all captured the western spirit of the State, while the name Ranger probably comes from the Texas Rangers Baseball team or the Application Agency for the State Act, said the study.
But with nicknames almost always comes a nickname. Giving a pet a nickname can influence behavior, especially if it is associated with models or rewards, according to an article from Petplace.
If it is used enough, a cat can learn and resume its nickname, in addition to its full name. However, the article warns that inconsistent names or the constant change in the nickname could confuse your pet.
