A road collision kills at least 21 people in northwestern Nigeria

Lagos, Nigeria (AP) – At least 21 people were killed in a road collision in the northwest of the state of Nigeria, officials said.
The Federal Road Safety Corps said that a robust truck and a commercial vehicle carrying passengers collided Sunday along the Zaria-Kano motorway, a large road connecting the cities of the region of the north of the country.
The agency said in a statement that its preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the commercial vehicle “had contravine the established traffic regulations, took place against the flow of traffic, resulting in a deadly frontal collision with the truck coming in the opposite direction”.
Only three people survived the accident with injuries, while 19 men and two women were killed, the statement said.
Accidents are common on the main arteries of Nigeria, often causing losses of lives. In 2024, 5,421 people were killed across the country in 9,570 incidents, according to the agency data.
