Loveland Frogman could become official Ohio cryptid under new bill

What is 4 feet tall, looks like a frog and could soon be memorialized by the state of Ohio?
It’s the Loveland Frogman, of course.
Reps. Jean Schmidt, R-Loveland, and Tristan Rader, D-Lakewood, introduced legislation to make Frogman — also known as the Loveland Frog — the official state cryptid. The frogman is one of many creatures allegedly roaming Ohio, although their existence has never been confirmed.

In a press release, lawmakers said cryptids help fuel tourism and foster a local identity, whether they are real or not.
“This bill is about showcasing our communities,” Rader said in a statement. “The Loveland Frog is quintessentially Ohio. It reflects the stories we tell, the places we’re proud of and the creativity that makes our state worth celebrating.”
The legend of the Loveland Frogman dates back to the 1950s. He is said to live along the Little Miami River and has been most commonly seen around Lake Isabella in Loveland, according to the Ohio Department of Development.
Loveland has made Frogman its town mascot and holds an annual Frogman Festival. It also inspired a musical and a 2023 horror film.
Bill 821 was introduced on April 13 and is awaiting committee assignment.
