Table of contents
It’s hard to escape Timothée Chalamet in the cinema these days. First he was Wonkathen he won over Bob Dylan, and now he takes audiences into the high-stakes world of 1950s table tennis as ping-pong star Marty Mauser.
Directed by Josh Safdie and distributed by A24, Marty Supreme is a major contender this awards season. Chalamet already won the Golden Globe for his portrayal of Marty and we wouldn’t be surprised if he (finally) won the Oscar. The sports comedy-drama also features a fantastic cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma (aka Tyler, the Creator), Abel Ferrara and Fran Drescher.
Even though it’s still circulating in theaters, you don’t need to fight the cold to watch it. Here’s everything you need to know to catch it from your couch.
What is Marty Supreme about?
Inspired by the real-life story of table tennis champion Marty Reisman, Marty Mauser (Chalamet) is a man with a big dream: to achieve greatness and bring the art of ping-pong to the masses. Already a legend in his mind, even if he is struggling to get by, Marty must first pay for his place in the championship abroad. And he’ll do anything to make it happen – whether it’s pointing a gun at a co-worker or seducing a washed-up movie star (Paltrow).
“Exploding with chaos, character and kinetic energy, Marty Supreme is a movie about the city’s scoundrels, their sins, and why we love them anyway,” writes Kristy Puchko, Mashable’s entertainment editor.

East Marty Supreme Is it worth watching?
Now the highest grossing A24 film nationally, Marty Supreme has exceeded Everything everywhere at the same time in North America with more than 80 million dollars. The public doesn’t just show up for this; they love it. Currently, the sports comedy holds an audience rating of 82 percent and an impressive 93 percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes – with most applauding Chalamet’s performance. He has already won the Golden Globe and is nominated for an Oscar. But that’s not all; the film is also nominated for Best Picture, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Casting, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Screenplay.
“These piquant dialogues, racing music and electric casting collide to create cinema that celebrates New York, while acknowledging its warts with a bloody smile. It all makes Marty Supreme an unusual audience,” Mashable’s Puchko writes in his review. “Full of wild humor and shocking twists and turns, it keeps its audience in a state of tension and surprise, rarely giving us time to breathe. And yet, what a pleasure to be out of breath.”
