3 tense Netflix thrillers to watch this week (March 2-8)

The versatility of thrillers is their greatest strength. These stretched films come in different shapes and sizes. Some are long political thrillers where the dialogue creates suspense and drives the story. Other thrillers rely on action and feature heroic performances that turn actors into stars. Due to its large library, Netflix is one of the best streamers for watching thrillers.

This week, our best thriller on Netflix is an Emmy-winning 2024 original. It features a remarkable performance from an actor who will headline DC. Lanterns later this year. Our other two selections include a paranoid thriller inspired by the great films of the 1970s and a survival thriller pitting an innocent woman against a serial killer.

Spider head

Chris Hemsworth in a rare villainous performance

Spider head is a film inspired by the paranoid thrillers of the 1970s. The parallax view, Marathon Man, The conversationAnd Three days of the Condor are clearly models for the 2022 Netflix Original based on Escape from Spiderhead by George Saunders. The backbone of the paranoid thriller is the protagonist who discovers a conspiracy theory that puts him in danger. Opposing forces attempt to persuade the protagonist to continue their efforts, but this is usually to no avail. It all culminates with a shocking reveal and an explosive ending.

The protagonist in Spider head is Jeff (Miles Teller), an inmate at an experimental facility where prisoners voluntarily serve as test subjects for new drugs. The facility is run by Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth), the kind-hearted leader who tries to be a friend to the prisoners. Many medications used at the facility alter the mental state of test subjects. Reactions range from lustful and loving to fearful and dangerous. It’s clear from the start that Steve is hiding information about the program’s true goals, and once Jeff figures it out, all hell breaks loose.

Spider head the source material is elevated by director Joseph Kosinski and screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who transform this familiar premise into a remarkable science fiction thriller. The film’s standout performance belongs to Hemsworth, who is having the time of his life playing a selfish maniac. Hemsworth is used to playing action heroes like Thor, so it’s a welcome change to see him as the charismatic villain.

Don’t move

An innovative game of cat and mouse

When I think of successful genre filmmakers, Sam Raimi comes to mind. Raimi is the visionary behind the Evil death franchise, which has heavily influenced modern horror film. Raimi is an expert at creating suspense and tension with the camera, using its rapid movements as a storytelling technique. Raimi finds humor in almost every situation, even in horrific scenarios that wouldn’t normally require it. Although he only produced Don’t movethe underrated 2024 thriller was practically designed in a lab to be a Raimi film.

A depressed Iris (that of Yellowstone Kelsey Asbille) begins the film with no hope of life after her young son dies while hiking. Iris debates suicide while standing on top of a cliff, but a kind stranger named Richard (Finn Wittrock) convinces her to step back and move on with her life. As Iris quickly learns, Richard convinced her to survive for selfish reasons. Richard is a serial killer who wants to torture Iris, so he injects her with a paralyzing agent. With the little time she has, Iris runs into the forest and hides before the drug paralyzes her entire body.

Don’t move is a thriller built on the suspense of what could happen: how long can Iris hide from Richard before the paralyzing agent disappears? Each scene is a ticking time bomb that increases the audience’s anxiety as they wonder if Richard will capture Iris. With a runtime of 92 minutes, Don’t move is all action and no filler, culminating with an epic conclusion.

Rebel Crest

If you didn’t know Aaron Pierre before, now you do

Netflix is expected to produce more low-budget thrillers and B-grade films. Audiences are clearly responding to these realistic action films that would fit right in with projects from the 1990s. Continue—Die hard in an airport model – and The tear—an offspring of Heat And The deceased—proved that audiences wanted more of this type of film. Two years ago, Jérémy Saulnier wrote and directed Rebel Crestwhich met all the criteria I look for in this style of film: a star who jumps off the screen, an easy-to-digest premise, and gripping action.

Aaron Pierre plays Terry Richmond, a former Marine who bikes to a small Louisiana town to free his cousin from prison. Upon entering the city, two dirty cops knock Terry off his bike and steal his money via civil forfeiture. When Terry meets the boss, Sandy Burnne (Don Johns), he quickly realizes that the authorities set the rules and have no intention of returning his money. Terry seeks help from a kind clerk (AnnaSophia Robb), but to no avail. The only way Terry can get what he wants is to take the law into his own hands.

Of course, I didn’t know much about Pierre before Rebel crest. Now I have season tickets for his next lead performance because he’s a legit action star. Rebel Crest is the type of star-studded film that should propel him toward more roles in this genre. If you don’t believe in Pierre, watch the PACE scene. Watch this, and you’ll see what I believe: Pierre needs to headline an action franchise.
