Amazon Expands Health AI Access for Virtual Health Care
Amazon expands access to its healthcare virtual assistant, Health AIthe company announced Tuesday. This feature was originally only available for A medical members, but it will now be available to most customers on the Amazon app and website. It will be rolling out over the next few weeks, with the aim of making it available to all US Amazon customers.
Amazon’s Health AI can answer general healthcare questions and provide wellness advice to people based on their medical history, medications, and health conditions. To receive a more personalized response, you can grant access to your medical record.
Other functions Health AI can help with include filling prescription refills through Amazon Pharmacy and connecting with One Medical doctors via video, in-person appointments, or messages.
AI in health is not the first chatbot to provide health advice. In January, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Healthwhich similarly answers health questions, deciphers lab results, and connects to your Apple Health app and medical records with your permission. Anthropic also introduced Claude for Healthcare, which connects to Apple Health and can help you understand and triage healthcare tasks such as medical bills. Apple He is also rumored to be working on his own AI health coach or assistant.

Concerns have been raised about chatbots and their use for sensitive topics such as health advice, as misdirection can cause harm. We will always caution against entering private and sensitive information into AI bots and taking their advice with a grain of salt, as AI is known to hallucinate. Check with your provider for any healthcare advice an AI chatbot gives you.
Amazon’s virtual assistant would be HIPAA compliant and intended only for medical assistance, not to replace a healthcare provider. Health AI will be able to answer questions like: “Can you explain my recent cholesterol results and what they mean for me?” or “Which allergy medications are safe with my current prescriptions?”
Amazon says Health AI will direct you to a human provider if you’re unsure about clinical recommendations. If you need specialized treatment, Health AI lets you connect with both a provider and a specialist.
Amazon Prime members interested in using Health AI will be eligible for a free introductory offer that will allow you to connect with a One Medical provider for five free care consultations via direct message. These services can also be shared with family members if you have Amazon Family and Prime for Young Adults or Prime Access.
If you use Health AI beyond these first five visits, it costs $29 for each telehealth session. If you plan to use it for longer, you can purchase a One Medical subscription for $99 per year. You can add up to five family members at $66 per year each.
