America First Victory? Proposed New Amendment Bars Foreign-Born From Power – RedState

There is one way to close the door on a political issue in the United States: pass and ratify an amendment to the Constitution. This, once an amendment is ratified, makes whatever was proposed the highest law in the land. They can be repealed; the 18th Amendment, which made Prohibition part of the Constitution, was repealed by the 21st Amendment. But they cannot be overturned by a court. Any court. If, for example, a constitutional amendment were ratified stipulating that henceforth everyone elected to the Senate or the House of Representatives, or anyone appointed to high office, must be a natural-born citizen, as every candidate for president must now be, then that would be quite definitive.

Interestingly, Republican Representative Nancy Mace (SC-01) introduced a resolution to begin the process in this direction. Representative Mace announced the decision on her official X account.

Representative Mace writes:

ICYMI: We have introduced a joint resolution proposing a constitutional amendment REQUIRING that Representatives, Senators, Federal Judges at all levels, and all Senate-confirmed officers be natural-born citizens.

It’s not complicated. If you hold power in the U.S. government, you must be a natural-born U.S. citizen.

Several foreign-born lawmakers who currently hold power in this administration have made it clear that their loyalties do not lie with the American people. Ilhan Omar is a great example of the need for this amendment.

The American people deserve leaders who put America first. This amendment guarantees it.

On Thursday, Fox News published excerpts of a statement from Rep. Mace, currently running for governor of South Carolina. Representative Mace, in defending her proposal, did not hesitate to name names.

“If you hold power in the United States government, you must be a natural-born American citizen,” Mace told Fox News Digital in a statement. “For too long, we have allowed foreign-born members to occupy seats in this government, while making it clear that their loyalties are not there. We see it every day.”

Mace specifically called out progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who was born in Somalia and became a naturalized citizen in 2000.

“Ilhan Omar is just one of many foreign-born members of this government who have made it clear time and time again that their loyalties are not there,” Mace said. “The American people deserve leaders who put America first. This amendment closes a gap in our Constitution that should have been closed long ago.”

There are a few things to consider about this proposal.

First, unfortunately, it is extremely unlikely that this idea will get anything done. The process of amending the Constitution was intentionally made difficult, to avoid capricious amendments (although, yes, the 18th Amendment ended up being a bad idea on stilts, and besides, don’t get me started on the 16th or 17th Amendments.) But it seems unlikely that this will even come out of the House or Representatives; On the one hand, Democrats would strongly oppose it, and it seems likely that a fair number of Republicans would view the proposal dimly.

Second: the above doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea. The Founders set the requirement to be president and vice president, but they probably did not foresee a day when the United States would face mass third world immigration, legal and illegal, from low-trust or no-trust societies – like Somalia.

Consider this another righteous idea that probably won’t go anywhere. But the world has no shortage of windmills to lean on.
