The Société d’Ia Anthropic has agreed to settle legal action by the authors. The cost: $ 1.5 billion.

A judge must still approve the regulations, but the lawyers representing the group of authors celebrated the major update of the case.

“As we can say, it is the greatest recovery in copyright of all time,” said Justin Nelson, lawyer for the authors, to the Associated Press. “This is the first of its kind in the AI era.”

The collective recourse of the authors argued that Anthropic had taken pirated copies of the book to form his chatbot AI, Claude. The trial covered around 500,000 works, which means that total payment could have come from around $ 3,000 per work, if the regulations were approved.

Anthropic let Claude run a store. Let’s just say that the AI agent is not a business tycoon.

Aparna Sridhar, deputy lawyer for Anthropic, said Ars Technica in a press release that the Court noted that “Anthropic’s approach for the training of AI models constitutes fair use”.

“Today’s regulation, if approved, will resolve the inherited inherited complaints from the applicants,” Sridhar told Ars. “We remain determined to develop safe AI systems that help people and organizations to extend their capacities, advance scientific discovery and solve complex problems.”

If the regulations are ultimately approved, it could prove to be an important benchmark in the fight against AI companies. Many artists, publishers and creative have continued AI companies, including famous authors George RR Martin and John Grisham, who, among others, continued Openai, saying that he has broken copyright to form his model.

Disclosure: Ziff Davis, the parent company of Mashable, filed a complaint in April against Openai, alleging that it violated the copyright of Ziff Davis in the training and exploitation of its AI systems.
