At least 5 people killed in Mexican navy small plane crash near Galveston, Texas

A small Mexican Navy plane on a medical mission crashed Monday near Galveston, Texas, killing at least five people, including a 2-year-old child, officials said.

Two people were taken to hospital, the U.S. Coast Guard said earlier. There was no immediate information on their condition. A passenger, aged 27, was not injured, the coast guard said. It is unclear if this person was one of two people who were taken to hospital. One person was still missing Monday evening, the Mexican navy said.

The Mexican navy said the plane was carrying eight people: four naval officers and four civilians. The U.S. Coast Guard later told CBS News that the plane was capable of carrying eight people, but it was unclear how many were on board.

The crash happened Monday around 3:17 p.m. local time near the base of a roadway near Galveston, along the Texas coast, about 50 miles southeast of Houston.

The Mexican Navy said in a statement that the plane was participating in a medical mission and had an accident. He promised to investigate the causes of the accident.

The navy is assisting local authorities with search and rescue operations, it said in an article on X.

Federal Aviation Administration officials were expected to arrive at the crash scene, the Texas Department of Public Safety said on X. DPS Sgt. Steven Woodard told CBS News that rescue measures were taken at the scene.

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said officials from its dive team, crime scene unit, drone unit and patrol were responding to the crash.

“The incident is still under investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post, adding that the public should avoid the area so emergency responders can work safely.

It was not immediately clear whether weather was a factor. However, the region has experienced foggy conditions in recent days, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Cameron Batiste.

He said that around 2:30 p.m. Monday, a fog appeared with visibility of about half a mile. Foggy conditions are expected to persist through Tuesday morning.
